Genetically Modified Food

One of the most challenging technologies of recent days is biotechnology. Discoveries in the scientific world can be used consciously or subconsciously for human prosperity and wellbeing as well as for misbalancing of human and environmental nature. The most widespread invention in agricultural and food systems is genetically modified organisms that can be put easily in one range with plastics regarding the global level of influence and threatened outcomes for the world society.

The purpose of genetic recombination in food depends on the history and different opinions in scientific, political, social, and business fields. Nevertheless, political and business reasons stand very close to each other. Genetically modified food was created specifically to continue the use of biotechnologies (nitrogen for bombs) left after the first and second world wars, which have been integrated successfully into agriculture with recent genetic engineering achievements and could be seen not only as a good bio-weapon but also as a great source of profit with controlling of seeds production all over the world.

At the same time, negative side of the above statement can be turned into positive social effect using scientific laboratory surveys: millions of people all over the world suffer from hunger and modified seeds can benefit with pest and disease resistance, herbicide and drought tolerance, and ability to produce medicine. Although real results of this social benefit are argued by many researchers as the present level of hunger statistics in the third countries does not show that the situation is improved.

Genetically modified food is made of organisms that have been modified by genetic engineering. In the beginning of the 90s biotechnology industry has decided to test modified food on the animals such as lab rats. Thus, no one expected those results to be so dramatic. The leading scientist, Dr Arpad Pusztai, who had been conducting the research for 101 days had reported afterwards the list of health disorders of rats during the experiment, which included decreased size of different organs, damaged thymus, spleen and immune system, enlarged intestines pancreas, and problems in stomach.

His two hour interview on the radio exploded stereotypes of genetically modified food safety, made him one of the most respectful scientists among British people and caused the national scandal with his forthcoming firing and exclusion from the scientific community.

At the present moment, approximately 80 percent of the food in supermarkets of the US is genetically modified. The Natural Society has published top list of genetically modified food, which includes such products as corn, soy, sugar, aspartame, papayas, canola, cotton, dairy, zucchini, and yellow squash. Moreover, meat products also may contain GMOs as there are many farmers and companies who feed animal by genetically modified seeds and such meat products are not required to be labeled.

Type of regulations of genetically modified organisms is different from country to country. In EU all food that contains genetically modified organisms must be labeled except the foods made from animals raised with genetically modified feed (meat, eggs, and dairy products). For instance, such country as Sweden does not allow to import or produce genetically modified food at all.

Governments of some countries, such as Canada, Germany, France, Luxembourg, and Austria have even developed Voluntary Labeling and Advertising of Foods that Are and Are Not Products of Genetic Engineering to provide thorough criteria for labeling and checking validity of labels. The U.S. policy on genetically modified food is regulated by three agencies: the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Each of them is responsible for specific field: EPA stands for bio-pesticides, FDA regulates safety of genetically modified crops and USDA is responsible for plant protection.

While the level of consumption of genetically modified food is decreasing in some countries, the huge investments are still running into new genetic engineering researches by key GMO conglomerates. Therefore, it is obvious that if inventions and discoveries are used for profit making and not for the nature and human well being they would never benefit a society. At the same time, every society should be conscious in its choice and understand the importance of living in harmony with nature.
